Obituary for Bailey E. Vanzant

Bailey E. Vanzant was born on April 28, 1922 to Bailey V. and Mary Elizabeth (Hines) Vanzant in Cherokee, Oklahoma. He departed this life on March 5, 2019 in Catoosa, Oklahoma at the age of 96.
Bailey grew up and attended school in Cherokee, Oklahoma. On November 26, 1942 he married Helen McWilliams, they were married sixty eight years at the time of her passing in 2011. Bailey joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1945. After his time in the service, he attended Northwestern State University graduating in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree and later obtained his master’s degree in 1969 from Northeastern State University.
Bailey started his teaching and coaching career at Pond Creek High School, starting in 1949 until 1954. He loved teaching and he loved his students. In 1954, he went to work for Pryor Public Schools and set the standard for all coaches that would follow him. In 1968 he became a member of the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Bailey left Pryor in 1969 to launch the basketball program at Seminole Junior College where he coached until 1972. He and Helen then moved to Lufkin, Texas where he coached and served as the director of athletics at Angelina College before returning to Pryor in 1986.
While retired, Bailey enjoyed playing cards, dominoes and going to horse races. He also grew roses for competition and also had show pigeons. Bailey was an excellent teacher, coach, mentor and friend. He was also a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and he will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
He is survived by his son, Pete Vanzant of Tulsa; three granddaughters, Gina Karathanos of Houston, Tricia Cook of Houston and Cindy Barton and husband Sean of Jenks; five great grandchildren and one niece, Susan Porter Moore of Ormond Beach, Florida.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Bailey and Mary Vanzant and his wife, Helen.
